INGREDIENTS

Unsalted butter

Cornstarch

Sugar

Either add store bought cherry pie filling to the dish OR mix cherries with sugar, orange zest, orange juice & cornstarch in a bowl then add to the prepared dish.

FOR THE FILLING

Add chocolate cake mix with a spoon, making sure to cover all the cherries. Smooth slightly but don't mix.

TO ASSEMBLE

Cut the butter into thin slices & top the cake. Bake for 45 minutes. Mix any dry spots with cherry juices from the bottom.

Bake for 15 minutes more (1 hour in total) until the top is dry and the filling bubbles around the edges. Serve warm plain or with whipped cream.

Cake Mix: Any kind of chocolate cake mix works, my favorite is devil's food cake mix. Variations: use some pure almond extract in the filling, or mix in some maraschino cherries for a different touch.  Sweetness: the cake mix has sugar, but  you can also use up to ½ cup of sugar for the filling.
