We're talking about a classic: homemade hot chocolate, the timeless cold-weather drink we love. If you add a swirl of whipped cream on top, you've got yourself a cozy, indulgent beverage that's perfect for the holidays and Winter days.

  • Total Time: 15 minutes
  • Yield: 6 cups

Ingredients

Units
  • 1 1/2 cups hot cocoa powder
  • 4 cups hot milk (or hot water or a mix of both if you want a lighter drink)
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Whip cold cream with powdered sugar until thick and almost firm peaks form. Don't overbeat it or it will curdle. Refrigerate it, covered, if not using it immediately.
  2. Place hot cocoa mix in the cup or cups you're serving.
  3. Heat the milk until it is very hot but not boiling
  4. Pour into the cup or cups and stir to mix well.
  5. Mound whipped cream on top, and sprinkle with cocoa powder or mini chocolate chips before serving.

Notes

  • Make ahead: it's best enjoyed fresh, but you can prepare a large batch and reheat it as needed. Store it in the refrigerator and warm it on the stove or microwave. Just be sure to whip up a fresh batch of cream for each serving.
  • Adjust sweetness: use more or less sugar for the hot cocoa mix.
  • Milk, water or both: all milk creates a richer, thicker drink. All water does the opposite. A mix of both gives you a lighter beverage with body. Choose your favorite.
